The Fourth Day

On Tuesday August 11, the team got down to some serious biking. We headed south down the Haines Highway from the Kathleen Lake campground. Our end point was Million Dollar Falls, about 45 miles down the road. 
 
The weather was better Tuesday than it had been, a fair day, but still cool to folks like myself who have gotten used to 90+ degree days in North Carolina. As usual, the scenery was spectacular. Here is the Kluane mountain range that stayed to our west through this entire day.
This marker spoke of a rock glacier, that you can see between the mountains in the background. The ice glaciers were most evident later in the trip.
Above is a panoramic mosaic of Dezadeash Lake. The leftmost photo looks almost North, the rightmost almost south. This idea was taken from a photo montage on the wall in Mike Heavey's home of Atlin Lake. 
We arrived at Million Dollar Falls between 3:30 and 4:30 pm. 
 
There were three theories about the name Million Dollar Falls
  • A plane crashed with a million dollars aboard near the falls.
  • During the Haines Highway construction, it cost a million dollars to construct the building campsite.
  • When the highway construction was complete, a million dollars worth of equipment was abandoned here.

    • The tourists in the second photo are Mike and Gary(with the camera), and in the back Eugene(red cap) and Tom P.(yellow jacket).
    Gary went all out for the meal Tuesday evening. We had steak (at least everyone but Gary had steak). Here are all the bikers on the trip (minus the photographer), from left to right: Dennis, Rick, Mike, Eugene(standing), Gary, Tom P. and Jerry. Tom Link took the photo.
    Most of us were in technology withdrawal by now. Rick was departing the next morning, so we needed to calculate his share of the expenses. Mike had his trusty laptop in tow, so I volunteered to set up a small spreadsheet to calculate what everyone owed.
