The Eighth Day

Saturday August 15th presented us with a tight schedule. We had to be at the ferry dock at 5:30AM for the 7:30AM departure for Haines. The ferry continued to Skagway.

Again on the ferry Malaspina, we headed back to Haines. The ferry stopped there for an hour and continued to Skagway. The weather was the most dreary we had seen. There were few Kodak moments on this part of the trip.
There were many waterfalls like this one visible from the ferry. You can see the clouds at the top of this photo, and it occasionally rained while we took the trip back.
The entertainment from the U.S. Park Service was very interesting. Here was a "prospector" from the Klondike gold rush.
Once we arrived in Skagway, we were back into the tourist mode. Here Mike poses while Eugene gets a photo from the other side of a monument dedicated to the gold rush.
Skagway seemed to me to be a real tourist trap. Get your wallet out.
I could not resist an opportunity to ham it up with the local historical markers.
As we departed Skagway, we saw the "White Pass and Yukon Route Scenic Railway". Looks like a model, doesn't it.
In a few minutes we were at the Canada border again. The weather stayed rather poor until we passed over the mountains in the White Pass. This is a photo Jerry took of Bove Island. A few minutes down the road from this photo we passed a Moose on the side of the road. Gary got a great video of it.
Several hours late, we arrived at what we thought would be our final destination in Atlin, B.C. Originally we planned to attend a dinner theater on this boat. We arrived just in time to see everyone leaving (about 8pm).
This is Peggy's house in Atlin. She and her daughter Nan were shining examples of the Canadian hospitality we had experienced throughout the trip. They treated us to a steak dinner (Tom P. was the steak chef) and we treated them to some of our conversation and humor. Here on the deck (from left to right) are Nan, Eugene, Mike, Tom L. and Tom P. and Peggy is sitting.
For this photo, all that is left of the original team is the Yukon 7. From left to right in the rear, Peggy, Tom Link, Nan, Jerry, Mike, Dennis and Eugene. In the front is Tom Proietti and Gary.

After dinner, we drove back to Whitehorse. We were concerned that we would not have the time in the morning to drive and get the team to their 11am fights.
